Veterans Model Project in need of donations

Posted: Updated:
WIXOM, Mich. (WJBK) -

Last week, we took time out to honor our veterans. Sean Tracy of Wixom does that all year round. He's the founder of the Veterans Model Project, a labor of love he started three years ago.

Tracy turned his childhood hobby of building models into a special gift for our men and women who've served. He uses his own money to purchase model kits and he builds each model by hand. Then he presents them to veterans free of charge.

"I have a deep respect and admiration for veterans, I love building models, so I just put the two together," he says.

Sean has built and presented models to total strangers, people he's struck up a conversation with, even veterans at a retirement community where he volunteers. It can take anywhere from 20 to 300 hours to build a single model. Sean has spent thousands of dollars out of his own pocket doing this. So far, he's handed out about 150 of his special gifts.

"It's nice to be remembered," says Bill Carruth, 88, of Royal Oak. The Korean War and WWII veteran received a model B-29 bomber from the Veterans Model Project.

"It's a grand thing that he does," Carruth continued.

Sean wants to keep his project going but he's running out of money. He has trouble asking for donations, so we'll do it for him. If you'd like to help out, you can make a donation at any Fifth Third Bank.
