CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

"Bridegroom" a new award-winning documentary, is about two men - Shane and Tom- that were in a committed relationship that was tragically cut short.

The film tells the story of what happened after Tom's accidental death, and what happens when a couple doesn't have the legal protection of marriage.

Shane Bitney Crone shared his story on Good Day Chicago Thursday morning, as well as the reason why he needed to share it – to put the issue on the agenda.

The marriage equality debate is still raging in Illinois, as supporters continue their fight to legalize gay marriage in the state.

The film was introduced by Former President Bill Clinton at the Tribeca Film Festival.

"This is really -- on one level -- a wonderful, sad, heartbreaking yet exhilarating and life affirming story," Clinton said. "On another level it's a story about our nation's struggle to make one more step in forming a more perfect union, for which marriage is both the symbol and substance."

Shane's documentary will make its worldwide television premiere on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network on October 27.
