BUFORD, Ga. -

Police have identified the two victims of a fatal shooting outside of a Buford home as 80-year-old Betty Jo Massengale and 73-year-old James Daniel Guler.

The deadly domestic dispute occurred at a home on Old Shadburn Ferry Road just after midnight Wednesday. Massengale and Guler lived together at the home, but were not married, Gwinnett County police say.

A Gwinnett police officer arrived at home about 12:30 a.m. As he walked toward the home, the officer saw Massengale walking toward him in the driveway.

Suddenly, Massengale was shot in the back by Guler, FOX 5 Atlanta's Marc Teichner reports. The woman fell to the ground and the officer fired at the man.

Guler then dropped to the ground and fired another shot, police said.

The officer then confirmed that both Guler and Massengale were dead. The officer was not injured and has been placed on paid administrative leave, police said.

Gwinnett County police were still at the home as of 6 a.m. The incident remained under investigation, police said. Police say there is no history of any domestic-related matters regarding either victim during the past several years.
