TEMPE, Ariz. -

An Arizona soldier killed in Afghanistan was remembered at a memorial service Friday. 25-year-old Jonam Russell graduated from ASU in 2011.

He grew up in Cottonwood. He graduated from Arizona State University with a business degree.

His friends say be always wanted to join the army and fight for our country.

A 21-gun salute for Lt. Jonam Russell. Russell was killed leading a dismounted patrol in Afghanistan.

"He told me he was going to bed early because he had to get up for an early mission," says Mollie Hornstein, Lt. Russell's friend.

Hours later, Mollie Hornstein found out her best friend died on that mission.

"He was a hero, he's my rock and he's my whole world."

Lt. Russell was a leader. He had lots of friends who attended a memorial today at ASU.

"When I got the call on Tuesday, its just, you can't believe it. it's not something that you ever want and that you ever thought would ever hear, so sitting in this room it just kind of makes it a little more real," says friend Jessica Mead.

The service was also streamed live for troops in Afghanistan.

"he had so many aspirations and had plans on everything he was going to do he lived every day to his fullest, it was go hard or go home," says Mead.

"He is my hero."

Lt. Kyle Visconti says he'll never forget his best friend -- his hero.

"Every soldier who will ever be under my command will know about Jonam Russell. I mean, my children will know about their father's friend Jonam and the sacrifice that he made. I'll go to my death bed telling about our phase in college and what he did for our country," says Lt. Visconti.

Russell's family did not attend the service. They did watch. They will have a funeral in Cottonwood.
