Talia's Legacy

Talia's Legacy

WINTER PARK, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

It’s an old medical office, but soon it will be a new headquarters for BASE Camp.  It’s a place where kids with cancer can laugh and have fun, hang out and be themselves, to forget about some of the challenges they are facing.

Thirteen year old Talia Castellano passed away this week after a six year battle with cancer.  Her video make up tutorials inspired girls with cancer and went viral worldwide.

Cindy Whitaker works with BASE Camp, a group that helps children with cancer.  She spent years watching Talia make other girls with cancer feel better.

Whitaker says, “She showed them that you don’t need hair.  You can look beautiful and rock it and still look beautiful.”

BASE Camp’s new headquarters will keep Talia’s legacy alive in Talia’s room.  It’s a place full of make-up and jewelry, where young patients can feel beautiful.

Whitaker adds, “It’s gonna be great, because girls can come here and get their nails done. They can get their make-up done. We’ll have different cosmetology people come in.”

The new headquarters will also have a room for boys with cancer to play video games, and a family room for parties.  Still, memories of BASE Camp’s most famous patient will live on in Talia’s room.

Whitaker points out, “It’s just all about making them feel like a girl, which is what Talia loved, and of course, the room will be bold and beautiful just like she was.”

BASE Camp is hoping for a ribbon cutting on Talia’s room and the rest of the facility on September First.  That’s just in time for national childhood cancer awareness month.
